Carlotte Kiekens

Carlotte Kiekens is head of clinic in the department of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM) at the University Hospitals Leuven (UZ Leuven) in Belgium. After obtaining a medical degree at KU Leuven in 1988 she further specialised in PRM at the Leuven University with residencies abroad in Strasbourg (F) and Geneva (CH). She started working at the PRM department of UZ Leuven in 1993 and is currently responsible for the rehabilitation programmes of spinal cord injury, peripheral nerve disease, (adult) spina bifida, multiple trauma, burns and amputation. She is a consultant at the Fertility Centre of UZ Leuven for persons with a disability since 1995. Other fields of interest are spasticity management, ethics in rehabilitation, sexuality and disability, and organizational aspects of rehabilitation. In 2007 she published a report on “Organisation and financing of musculoskeletal and neurological rehabilitation in Belgium”, in collaboration with the Belgian Health Knowledge Centre. In 2008 she was accredited in Insurance Medicine and Medical Expertise. Since 2004 she is the President of the Technical Board of Mobility Aids at the National Institute for Health and Disability Insurance. She is a Senior Fellow of the European Board of Physical & Rehabilitation Medicine. She is a member of several societies and boards in Belgium and abroad. She is the general secretary of the European Society of PRM and deputy secretary of the Professional Practice Committee at the UEMS PRM Section. In 2014 she became a member of the European Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine. Since 2016 she is the coordinator of the then launched Cochrane Rehabilitation Field. She is involved in academic activities and scientific research in several domains and published papers as well as book chapters. She is participating in rehabilitation projects in low income countries, with Lumos (Leuven University Medical Development Cooperation and Solidarity) and the Asian and African Network for Spinal Cord Injury.
