Dr. Austin graduated from the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program in 1985, the University of Buffalo with an MSN in 1990 and from the University of Cincinnati with a PhD in nursing in 2001. As a military member and as a civilian, he has served as a staff nurse anesthetist, a didactic and clinical instructor, assistant program director, program director, and consultant to the US Air Force Surgeon General. Since 2008, Dr. Austin has been a faculty member at Texas Wesleyan University mainly teaching in the online Doctor of Nurse Anesthesia Practice program. He is a two-time chair of the AANA Practice Committee and serves on the NBCRNA Recognition Panel for Equipment and Technology. He was named the John Garde Researcher of the Year in 2013. He has been part of a group that have written extensively about forced-air warming and surgical site infection. He resides with wife in suburban Maryland where he maintains a clinical practice.
