Goldie D. Brangman Diversity & Inclusion Lecture: Crafting a Diversity and Inclusion Strategic Plan at a Nurse Anesthesia Program: A Journey Not a Destination (1 Class A CE)

Saturday, September 22
9:15 AM - 10:15 AM
Location: Room 210, Hynes

The Agency on Healthcare Research and Quality in their 2013 Health Disparities Report discussed the need to healthcare workforce diversity. However, the nurse anesthesia profession historically is not racially or ethically diverse with 91% Caucasian in our last practitioner surgery. Nurse anesthesia educators are the gateway to the profession, and best practices should be instituted to close this disparate gap. In order to achieve this outcome, strategic planning, pipeline/outreach activities, mentorship programming aimed at retention, and under-represented diverse faculty recruitment. Incremental change through strategic planning and operationalization promotes a more diverse nurse anesthesia profession, but quality improvement should be continuous and timely.
