Preoperative Management of the Cardiac Patient Undergoing Cardiac and Noncardiac Surgery: Assessment and Plan of Care (1 Class A CE with .5 Pharm)

Preoperative risk stratification, assessment and individualization of plan of care in patients with cardiac disease is key in avoiding adverse outcomes. In this presentation, point of care assessment and other resources are described including analysis of patient data and transthoracic echocardiography. Monitoring strategies and cardiac device management, along with concurrent drug therapies are described in relationship to various pathologies including heart failure, dysrhythmias, congenital and heart valve disease.

Dr. Shields is a cardiothoracic nurse anesthetist at Vanderbilt and has been practicing in Nashville Tennessee for 30 years. He is involved with the American Society of Echocardiography, the Point of Care Ultrasound Society, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Cardiology. He has trained extensively with advanced echo techniques for cardiac surgery including 3-D with Phillips and his practice includes heart and lung transplantation and left ventricular assist devices. Dr. Shields has published in Anesthesia and Analgesia, the Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia and the AANA Journal, and is on faculty at Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia.
