CRISPR Cas-9 and its Application to Anesthesia (.5 Class A CE)

Monday, September 24
1:00 PM - 1:30 PM
Location: Ballroom A, Hynes

The Cas-9 (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated-9) enzyme has been discovered as an inexpensive and programmable tool that allows molecular biologists to manipulate DNA in living eukaryotic cells. This opens the door to a vast array of biomedical applications including, but not limited to, curing many genetic diseases and controlling the expression of vital proteins in humans. The intent of this presentation is to describe the molecular mechanism, current uses of the Cas-9 enzyme, and potential applicaiton to anesthesia of the Cas-9 enzyme.

Learning Objectives:

Sean P. Zajdel, BSN, RN, SRNA

Student Registered Nurse Anesthetist
York College of Pennsylvania/WellSpan Health Nurse Anesthetist Program
Camp Hill, Pennsylvania

Sean Zajdel completed his BSN with a minor in chemistry in 2013 from The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing. While at the University of Pittsburgh, he was awarded the Selfless Spirit award and was deemed a Senior of the Year Finalist for his work in founding a fraternity and an endowment scholarship for his late sister Michelle. Since graduation, he has worked at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in orthopedic trauma and Penn State Hershey Medical Center’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit as a staff nurse. He started school at York College of Pennsylvania’s Well Span Health Nurse Anesthesia program in 2016 and is enjoying his time learning the art of anesthesia as well as meeting the wonderful people who make up the CRNA community. Sean would like to thank his wife, Lindsay, for supporting him through CRNA School despite how poor he is and how much student loan debt he has accrued.
