Mark Ryan is the Assistant Director for Collections & Exhibitions at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis. His formal education includes earning both a B.S in Biology and a B.A. in History from the University of Wyoming in 1996 and an M.A. in Museum Science from Texas Tech University in 1999.
Ryan has over twenty years of experience working in the registration and collections management profession in art, historical and natural history institutions and additional interest in and experience working with practitioners in the field of conservation.
Ryan’s current responsibilities at the Kemper include leadership of the registration, facilities, preparation and security departments of the Museum, as well as overseeing collections care and the logistical aspects of the development and implementation of exhibitions. Additional responsibilities include involvement in the museum’s current expansion project, direction of the museum’s long-range planning relating to the collections and exhibitions and the maintenance of departmental budgets, policies and procedures.
He is an active participant, leader and advocate for collections care through a number of current and past activities, including serving on the boards of the Association of Registrars and Collections Specialists (ARCS), the Midwest Art Conservation Center (MACC) and the Registrars Committee of the American Alliance of Museums (RC-AAM) – now the Collections Stewardship Professional Network (CS-AAM).
He has also participated on both the regional and national level by presenting at conferences, co-organized the Registrar’s Committee of the American Alliance of Museum’s annual Reinforcement Crew volunteer event for seven years, served on the Mid America Arts Alliance/Exhibits USA Advisory Panel and has served in both field and panel reviewer capacities for IMLS’s Museums for America grant program since 2009.
