PR18 - An Accuracy Evaluation of Apex Locators Integrated in Endodontic Rotary Motors

Introduction: Endodontic rotary motors with integrated apex locator have been developed. However, there is limited information about accuracy of them. In study, we evaluated the accuracy of apex locators integrated in endodontic rotary motors. Methods: After crown portion of 20 extracted human premolars was removed, coronal third of canal was enlarged. The actual canal length (CL) were measured under a dental microscope at x10 magnification. After a tooth was fixed into saline-filled Endo Training Model (Castillo; VDW, Munich, Germany), electronic CL was measured using four apex locators; two standalone apex locators (iRoot; Meta Biomed, Cheongju, Korea, and Propex Pixi; Dentsply-Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland) and two integrated apex locators (VDW Gold;VDW and Krafit; Saeyang, Deagu, Korea). A k-file tip was located at “APEX” mark for each apex locator. After the K-file was removed from the tooth, the length from rubber stop to file tip was measured photographically using a DSLR camera. That measuring was repeated 10 times. The discrepancy (electronic CL – actual CL) were analyzed using one-way ANOVA (P < .05). Results: The discrepancy values were 0.14 mm (iRoot), -0.25 mm (Propex Pixi), -0.11 mm (VDW Gold) and 0.14 mm (Krafit). There was no statistically significance among 4 apex locators. Conclusions:Within limitation of the present study, there were no significant different between standalone and integrated apex locators. Therefore, apex locator integrated in endodontic rotary motor could be available clinically.
