PR17 - Association Between Radiographically Diagnosed Apical Periodontitis with Cardiovascular Disease and Diabetes in Endodontic Patients

Thursday, April 26
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Room: Exhibit Hall

The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between apical periodontitis and systemic disease. Oral health and its correlation to systemic disease first made its medical cross-translational breakthrough with periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease. Not much focus has been placed in endodontic disease its correlation with cardiovascular disease until more recently. And in most recent months, concluded that there maybe a bidirectional link between cardiovascular disease and endodontic disease. This study will focus on cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and its relationship to apical periodontitis. Materials and Methods: Cardiovascular diseased and diabetic patients will be identified through in the Boston University School of Dental Medicine’s electronic dental records for study inclusion: EDRs were required to have complete patient history. All radiographs were taken within the dental school system. A minimum of 100 patients for three categories will be analyzed: Healthy, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  On average, there will be 50 males and 50 females within each group. Patients will further be classified by age. All radiographic images will be obtained from Boston University School of Dental Medicine Department of Endodontics and be interpreted by two residents to identify periapical radiolucent lesions. Measurements of the size of lesion will be recorded independently by each resident and averaged. All data will analyzed for statistical significance.
