PR89 - Comparison Between XP Endo Finisher File and EndoActivator on Removal of Calcium Hydroxide from the Root Canal System: Ex Vivo Study, SEM Analysis.

Aim: The purpose of this ex vivo study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different methods on removing calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 from the root canal by using a scanning electron microscope. Material and Methods: Eighteen extracted single-rooted teeth were divided randomly into three groups. Root canal instrumentation was performed, and the canals were filled with Ca(OH)2 paste. One week later, three different techniques were used for Ca(OH)2 removal: Group A,(controlled) a plastic syringe with a 30-G needle open-ended. Group B, EndoActivator. In Group C, XP-endo Finisher file. All the groups irrigated with 18% EDTA and 1% NaOCl. The canal were sectioned, and the remaining amount of Ca(OH)2 on pulpal suface was evaluated using a SEM, 10 pictures randomly in each third, a total of 30 pictures for each tooth. A graded scoring system was used to assess the amount of residue Ca(OH)2 on each third of the canal. Data were analyzed using (SPSS 21.0), descriptive statistics were used to describe the evaluation scores of ordinal data (0,1 and 2). As the outcome variable does not follow normal distribution a non-parametric , Kruskal Wallis statistical test was used to compare the mean ranks. Results: EndoActivator significantly removed Ca(OH)2 from root canal walls more than the other groups. XP Endo Finisher file shows the least Ca(OH)2 removal from root canal walls among the experimental groups statistically significant. Conclusions: With the limitation of our study, Endoactivator was effective in removing Ca(OH)2.
