PR36 - Adoption of Endodontic Technological Advancements: A Questionnaire-Based Study

Thursday, April 26
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Room: Exhibit Hall

The purpose of this study was to investigate the adoption and usage of emerging technologies by the active members of the American Association of Endodontists (AAE). An invitation to participate in a web-based survey was sent to 4,060 active members of the AAE. The survey consisted of 13 questions with four sub-questions. These included demographic questions asking for age, gender, number of years since residency, practice type and setting, number of endodontists in the local area, and American Board of Endodontics Diplomate status. A total of 930 endodontists answered all the survey questions, representing a 22.9% completion rate. Multiple comparisons were accomplished using the Kruskal-Wallis test, with Dunn-Bonferroni post-hoc comparisons used to elucidate significant results. Pairwise comparisons were accomplished using the chi-squared test, and multivariate analysis examining adoption rates of new technology was performed using logistic regression. Significance was declared at p<0.05 for all tests. All data were analyzed by using SPSS version 23.0 software (SPSS, Chicago, IL). The majority of participants (80.4%) utilize CBCT technology. The vast majority (96.4%) are using NiTi rotary files size 17 or smaller. Only 2.4% (n=22) are using laser technology, while 3.6% (n=33) of participants reported using Gentlewave by Sonendo, and 1.8% (n=17) have used guided access technology. Only Diplomate status was predictive of general technology adoption (p=0.01). This study may serve as a benchmark toward future studies investigating the adoption trends of emerging endodontic technological advancements.
