PR104 - Removal of Root Canal Fillings in Oval Canals Using Three Different Single-File Instruments and the Supplementary Use of XP-3D Finisher

Thursday, April 26
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Room: Exhibit Hall

The aim of this study was to evaluate by means of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), the retreatment efficacy of of three different single-file instruments. WaveOne Gold (WOG), Hyflex EDM (EDM) and XP Shaper (XPS) and after the use of the supplementary file XP Finisher (XPF). Materials & Methods: Fifty-seven incisors presenting an oval single canal were prepared to a size 30.04 using rotary instruments and obturated using warm vertical condensation. Teeth were randomly divided into three groups (n=19). After 30 days (37ºC 100% humidity), each group was retreated using one of the single-file systems, followed by XPF to further assist in removing the filling material. CBCT scans were taken three times for each tooth (before retreatment, after using one of the three files, and after using the XP finisher) to determine the percentage of filling remaining in the root canal space. Data was statistically analyzed at a 5% significance level using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results: WOG presented the greater percentage of remaining filling at the apical and middle thirds (p 0.05). Overall, the use of XP Finisher decreased the amount of remaining material, being statistically significant only for: WOG/ apical and cervical thirds, EDM/cervical and XPS/middle. Conclusions: XPS and EDM were more effective in retreatment than WOG. The supplemental use of XPF assisted in further reducing the amount of filling material inside the canal but it did not completely removed all the remaining material.
