PR67 - Pre-Doctoral Endodontic Experiences

Thursday, April 26
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Room: Exhibit Hall

There is a growing concern among pre-doctoral endodontic program directors that dental students are not getting an adequate clinical experience as a result of patient shortages. This lack of exposure translates to a new generation of general dentists that are not equipped to perform non-surgical root canal therapy independently. The objective of this study is to identify possible factors that may contribute to clinical case shortages in pre-doctoral endodontic programs. Analysis of these elements may aid dental schools in improving student experience in endodontics. Pre-doctoral endodontic program directors and chairman of 76 U.S. and Canadian dental schools were queried via the online survey service Survey Monkey. Twenty multiple-choice and free text response questions were sent. Preliminary findings show that 80.95% of dental schools have clinical endodontic case shortages. Eighty percent of the class of 2017 graduated with six clinical cases or less. Fifty-five percent of respondents indicated that their endodontic department does not manage school emergencies. Medicaid coverage of root canal therapy in 68.42% of programs is limited to patients 18 years or younger. Pre-doctoral students are not allowed to treat molars in 65% of the programs. Based on the findings, we conclude that there are several elements that may significantly restrict the availability of pre-doctoral clinical endodontic cases. Re-evaluation of program guidelines may account for some of the limiting factors and may facilitate a greater influx of clinical cases to train the future generation of dentists.

Arthur Royzner

Endodontics Resident (RUTGERS)

Rutgers School of Dental Medicine Endodontic Resident (2019), Rutgers School of Dental Medicine Graduate (2017). Our study aims to come up with an explanation or provide factors for undergraduate pre-doctoral endodontic case shortages. This information may help program directors modify their programs to improve student experience.
