PR74 - Comparison of Torsional Properties Between ProTaper Gold and EdgeTaper Platinum NiTi Rotary Files After Simulated Clinical Use

The objective of this study is to compare Torsional Force to Fracture (TFF) of Edge Taper Platinum™ (ETP) and ProTaper® Gold (PTG) Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments in as-received condition, after 1 and 3 simulated clinical uses. Materials and Methods: Two-hundred simulated root canals (30o curvature) Endo-training blocs were randomly divided into two groups (ETP and PTG). File sets consisted of SX, S1, S2, F1, and F2 files 25 mm in length (N=10/size). Each set of files were used to prepare either one or three blocs under simulated clinical conditions per manufacturer instructions. Later, files were tested for mechanical properties per ISO 3630-1 guidelines by using a Torsiometer (Sabri Dental Enterprises, Inc, Downers Grove, IL). The values of peak torque (gm-cm) and angle rotation (°) were recorded for each file tested. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer tests (p<.05). Within each ETP and PTG group a significant (p<.05) lower TFF value was seen after three uses when compared to the as received condition and single use. Between groups there was a statistical significant difference in angle of rotation between ETP>PTG (SX, S1, and F2). There was no difference in TFF between ETP and PTG after one and three uses between each file system. Conclusions: After one and three uses the torsional resistance to fracture in both groups markedly decreased, hence multiple use of files is cautioned.  PTG and ETP have similar torsional resistance to fracture but angle of rotation to fracture is higher in ETP group due differences in thermomechanical processing.

Dr. Alapati received his DDS from India; Certificate in General Practice Residency; MS in Dental Materials, his Ph.D. in Oral Biology from The Ohio State University, and a Certificate in Endodontics from University of Illinois at Chicago. He has authored 2 book chapters, 30 published papers and more than 65 published research presentations at National and International Dental Research meetings. He currently serves on multiple national committees related to clinical endodontics and oral health research. He serves as a Consultant/Council for Scientific Affairs for ADA ISO TC 106, Endodontic Instruments and Materials. He was an American Association of Endodontists (AAE) Foundation Educator Fellowship award recipient in 2009 and now a Trustee on Foundation for Endodontics. He receives funding from both NIH and private foundations. Dr. Alapati is active both at Allen Anderson Faculty Dental Practice – limited to Endodontics and Clinical Translational Research Laboratory (CTRL) focusing on Regenerative Clinical Science and Tissue Bioprinting.

Bradford R. Johnson

Dr. Johnson completed his undergraduate education at the University of Colorado, received his DDS degree from Virginia Commonwealth University, and endodontics specialty training at the University of Illinois at Chicago where he is currently department head and Director of PostGraduate Endodontics. Dr. Johnson has published over 50 clinical and research articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed dental journals and is a coauthor of five textbook chapters. In addition to full-time teaching, he maintains a part-time clinical practice limited to endodontics.
