Flavio Steinwurz, MD, MACG, received his medical degree in 1980 and completed his residency in 1984 at São Paulo Federal University, in Brazil. In 1987, he trained in gastroenterology with a focus in inflammatory bowel diseases at Lenox Hill Hospital, NY, under Dr. Burton I. Korelitz. In 1988, he returned to Brazil and became an Assistant Professor at Santos School of Medicine and was board certified in gastroenterology by the Brazilian Medical Association (AMB) and the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology (FBG). In 1994, he became a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology (FACG) and in 1996, he received, with honor, his Mastership in Gastroenterology by the Brazilian Institute for the Study and Research in Gastroenterology. He served as President of the Brazilian Association for Crohn's and Colitis from 1999 to 2015. From 2004 to 2010, he was the ACG Governor for Brazil and from 2007 to 2010, the Director of Research of the Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital, São Paulo, Brazil. In 2010, Dr. Steinwurz became a member of the International Organization for the study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD). He is also a member of the advisory board and/or reviewer for many scientific journals including The American Journal of Gastroenterology, Digestive Disease and Sciences, Journal of Crohn's and Colitis, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Clinics. Dr. Steinwurz received the 2010 Geraldo Siffert Award for the Best Abstract presented at the Brazilian Week of Gastroenterology. In 2012, he was honored with the ACG International Leadership Award and in 2014, he received the ACG William D. Carey Award. He was elected General Secretary of the Panamerican Crohn's and Colitis Organization (PANCCO) in 2014. In 2016, he became the Coordinator of the International Relations Committee of the Brazilian Federation of Gastroenterology, as well as Emeritus President of the Brazilian Association for Crohn's and Colitis, and was elected Secretary General of the São Paulo Gastroenterology Society.
