Dr. Colleen Schmitt is a board-certified gastroenterologist and President of Galen Medical Group, Chattanooga. She obtained her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of South Alabama, and finished internship and residency in Internal Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston. She completed joint fellowships in Gastroenterology at Duke University Medical Center and Health Services Research at the Durham V.A. Hospital, earning her Master's degree in Biometry and Informatics. Dr. Schmitt has served on the Tennessee Technical Advisory Group for the Colonoscopy Episode of Care. She is Co-Chair of the Gastrointestinal Disease Management-Medical and Surgical Clinical Subcommittee, for Episodes of Care for implementation by CMS in 2018. Dr. Schmitt became an ACG Fellow in 1999. She has co-chaired ACG's Research Committee, and served on the Ad Hoc Committee on Practice Parameters, National Affairs, and Publications Committees. She currently serves on the Board of the GI Quality Improvement Consortium (GIQuIC), where she has also served on the Measures and Finance Committees. She is Past President of the ASGE, founding the ASGE Leadership Education and Development (LEAD) program for women and minorities, and currently serves as a member of the ABIM Gastroenterology Specialty Board. She served as Chief of Gastroenterology, University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga Unit, where she was Director of Clinical Research and founded the areas first multi-specialty clinical trials units, Southeastern Clinical and Memorial Research Centers. Dr. Schmitt has worked in health and policy at the local, state, and national level, and helped develop the Volunteers in Medicine (VIM) Clinic, Chattanooga, where she has served on the Board, as well as the Board of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society. She is a founding VIM physician, and volunteers for the Project Access, and local leadership programs. She has authored numerous manuscripts and book chapters.
