Aasma Shaukat, MD, MPH, FACG, is the Section Chief of GI at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center and Associate Program Professor at the University of Minnesota. Broadly, Dr. Shaukat's research interests are colorectal cancer screening, translational and clinical research on gastrointestinal cancers, and chemoprevention among average-risk individuals, and those with IBD. She is studying quality indicators for colonoscopy and molecular markers of interval cancers. Her work involves understanding the pathways by which colon polyps develop and progress to colon cancer, developing and validating biomarkers of risk of colon cancer, identifying long-term benefits of CRC screening, and studying the effect of chemoprevention on reducing this risk.

Desmond J. Leddin

Desmond Leddin is a Professor of Medicine at Dalhousie University in Canada and adjunct Professor at the University of Limerick in Ireland. He completed medical school in Trinity College Dublin. Following completion of residency training at Queens University Ontario, and the University of Toronto, in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology, he completed a Masters in Physiology with a focus on small intestinal injury. He has held many education positions in Gastroenterology in Canada including chair of the Royal College of Canada examination board in GI and has chaired the Canadian Association of Gastroenterology (CAG) undergraduate and graduate education committees. He teaches undergraduates in physiology, nutrition, and professional competencies, in Canada and Ireland. He has served as Division head at Dalhousie in GI, is a previous president of the CAG. Research interests include colon cancer in the developed and developing world, inflammatory bowel disease, patient access to care, and the humanites. He has been involved in international health for over a decade. In addition to teaching in the developing world he is director of the twenty three World Gastroenterology Organization training centers and was one of the team responsible for the expansion of the centers in sub Saharan Africa. This was done in partnership with developed world and developing world universities, with industry, and with national GI societies. Recently he has been involved with the linkage of a University hospital network with a primary care delivery in northern Ghana. He sits on the board of two international NGO's.
