The Henry L. Bockus Lectureship and medal is awarded in commemoration of Henry L. Bockus, the first president of WGO, to a gastroenterologist who, in the opinion of the WGO Governing Council, has made a distinguished contribution to the clinical practice, science and/or teaching of gastroenterology.

Dr. Shiv Kumar Sarin obtained his MB,BS degree with seven gold medals (1974), his MD in General Medicine (1978) from Rajasthan University, and his Fellowship in Gastroenterology from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, in 1981. He served as Director Professor and Head of Gastroenterology at the G.B. Pant Hospital, University of Delhi. He is currently the Senior Professor and Head, Department of Hepatology and Director, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Director, WHO Collaborative Center on Viral Hepatitis and Liver Diseases at ILBS, New Delhi, India, and Adjunct Faculty, Molecular Medicine at JNU. Prof. Sarin's contributions to the field of Hepatology include the landmark NEJM paper, "Sarin's Classification of Gastric Varices." His seminal contributions on liver regeneration using growth factors have the potential for providing non-transplant options to ACLF patients. He has more than 500 publications, helped develop 18 major guidelines, edited 13 books, and is the founding Co-Chief Editor of Hepatology International. He started the APASL School of Hepatology and was instrumental in setting up the ILBS in India, the first dedicated 'Liver University' globally, which was recently designated as the first WHO Collaborative Center globally in Liver Diseases. Prof. Sarin has received India's third highest civilian award, the Padma Bhushan. He has received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, India's highest science award, and many other awards as well as a Fograty Fellowship of the NIH to work at Yale University, and a Senior Fellowship of the Japanese Society for Promotion of Science to work at Chiba, Japan. Prof. Sarin has served as President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology, Indian Association for the Study of the Liver, and the Asian Pacific Association of Liver.

David J. Bjorkman

David J. Bjorkman, M.D., M.S.P.H., is the President of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). He is a Professor at the University of Utah School of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Dr. Bjorkman served as the Dean of the University of Utah School of Medicine from 2004 to 2011 and as the Executive Medical Director of the University of Utah Medical Group from 2001 to 2011. He then was Dean and Executive Director of Medical Affairs for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine from 2011 to 2016 before returning to the University of Utah as a Professor. Dr. Bjorkman holds a medical degree from the University of Utah, a master's degree in Epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health at Harvard University, a master's degree in Public Health and Health Services Administration and a bachelor's degree in Political Science from the University of Utah. He is also board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. Dr. Bjorkman is a past president of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. His research interests include upper gastrointestinal bleeding, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug injury to the gastrointestinal tract and clinical outcomes in gastroenterology. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London, the American College of Physicians, the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American College of Gastroenterology and the American Gastroenterological Association.
