Strengthening The Arcs Presence

Grande Ballroom A

Promoting Our Mission Through Engaging and Creative Community-Based Events

Friday, November 3
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: Grande Ballroom A

Target Audience: Self-Advocates

This workshop is designed to inspire attendees to imagine different ways of spreading The Arc's mission and core values with members of the general public, legislators, and family members. The aim is to galvanize conference attendees to develop fun and educational events that will effectively engage people of all ages to support equity, community inclusion, and person-first thinking. Self-advocacy is a worldwide social movement led by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). The self-advocacy movement encourages people with I/DD to connect with members of the general public, professionals, and policymakers through community-based events in an effort to inspire collective action. This workshop will present conference attendees with an opportunity to learn about the many educational outreach and awareness events hosted by members of the New Jersey Statewide Self-Advocacy Network (NJSSAN), which is directly supported by The Arc of New Jersey’s Self-Advocacy Project (NJSAP) team. Attendees will review the mission and vision behind each of the annual events hosted by members of the NJSSAN and NJSAP teams, as well as review takeaways, talking points, and media coverage of recent awareness events. This workshop will also highlight specific techniques for replicating and promoting similar events nationwide.
