Supporting Families

Harbor Island 1

Siblings: The Past, Present and Future

Friday, November 3
2:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Location: Harbor Island 1

Target Audience: Professionals|Family Members

During this session, Sandra Tucker will be discussing ways that siblings can be supported. Siblings of individuals with I/DD are part of the past, the present and the future, which means they need to be given the support to be able to continue being caregivers or advocates for themselves, their brothers/sisters, their aging parents and their own families. During this session, we will focus on how to address the past issues that have occurred and a sibling's current needs, such as self-care and how to begin the conversation and planning for the future. These will be hands on tools and resources that families and organizations are able to use, such as journals, books, Sibshops, etc. We will also talk about how to find resources in your area, such as connecting with your local Sibling Leadership Network organization, webinars and other trainings. One last aspect will be how to implement a sibling kit. The sibling kit can either be a toolkit that siblings pull out when they need to decompress or it can be something that is used when their brother/sister is at a doctor's appointment or has therapy. Siblings are the longest relationship in a person's life and often become caregivers or advocates for their brother/sister. Ensuring they have resources, support and a voice are vital to the current and future disability community.
