Creating Opportunities: The Impact of Technology Programs and Integration

Target Audience: Professionals

Learn how chapters in The Arc are including technology in their service delivery, teaching people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to use technology, and raising funding to pay for it.

This presentation will be broken into 3 parts:
Part I – The Arc National: Description of current technology initiatives and our vision for the impact of technology integration at the chapter level
Part II –The Arc of Lane County: What inclined this chapter to get involved with the Comcast NBCUniversal Learning Lab and Comcast NBCUniversal Tech Coaching Centers, and how they incorporated this program into existing initiatives so that they did not need to build this from scratch. They will also discuss successes vs. challenges, suggestions on how another chapter of The Arc may think about moving forward to begin incorporating tech coaching, and how funder collaboration has been beneficial to grow the chapter's opportunities at the local level.
Part III – Comcast NBCUniversal: Review of work that Comcast NBCUniversal is focused on in the technology space, pointers on how to make the most of your partnership, and how to bridge small grants into large opportunities for chapters of The Arc

Fred Maahs is the Senior Director, Community Investment, Comcast Corporation, and Vice President of the Comcast Foundation. He leads Comcast's national community partnerships and a variety of diverse partnerships at the corporate and regional level. Fred is a Past Chair of the American Association of People with Disabilities, a 1st Vice Chair on the International Easterseals Board of Directors and serves on the US Business Leadership Network's (USBLN) Disability Equality Index Advisory Committee. He is certified in Corporate Social Responsibility Leadership from the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College and resides in Wilmington, Delaware.

Angela Phinney

Angela Phinney, Director of Business Development, has a BS in Business Administration and over 20 years of experience with The Arc Lane County. Angela has a rich background in sales, marketing, grant writing, contracts and public relations. She has worked in all facets of The Arc ranging from direct care to program development and to management. Angela has a brother with intellectual and developmental disabilities and loves that The Arc can make such a difference in individuals lives throughout their entire lifespan. Seeing someone from a young age blossoming to an adult that lives, works and recreates in the community is of utmost importance. Angela's expertise and experience includes:

Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP), Certified Information Specialist (CIS), Employment Opportunity Professional

Abe Rafi

Director of Digital Strategy & Online Services

Abe Rafi is charged with enabling The Arc to achieve the digital dimensions of its goals. He has organized and led product development teams to create online communities, mobile applications, websites and business intelligence tools for social change organizations such as Ashoka, Disability Rights International, The Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, and for various clients as the founder of a web design firm. Abe is a long-time advocate for the rights of people with disabilities, having reported on human rights abuses in institutions for people with disabilities and trained human rights activists in Serbia, Turkey, and Russia. He is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
