What I Know for Sure: The Essentials of International Student Advising

Change is constant in the international student advising field, with work and interactions shaped by campus, national, and international events. A panel of experienced international student advisers dialogue about what is essential, by sharing one belief and one strategy about advising. Participants join the discussion, reflect, review resources, and plan for action.

Nancy E. Young

International Educational Planner
Clark College International Programs

Nancy E. Young is an enthusiastic, experienced, and committed international educator. She is the author of The Handbook of International Student Advising third edition with Gary Althen.

Nancy wrote the University of Minnesota report "Seeking Best Practices for Integrating International and Domestic Students,” which introduces a definition of integration encompassing international education. She chaired a standing-room only session on integration at the NAFSA 2015 conference.

Nancy has presented over 70 workshops and sessions at an array of professional association conferences, on topics ranging from nonresident tax guidance to making difficult decisions to interpreting F-1 regulations.

Nancy is passionate about international education and has rich experience in the field. She has held several positions in NAFSA including:
trainer corps, F-1 regulatory committee, the IELKC mid-career representative, and the Region 1 TLS representative.

Nancy has led several volunteer teams, including an ad hoc tax committee within NAFSA that created the 1040NREZ form, resulting in an IRS award to NAFSA.

She has written extensively for the international education field, including interviews with NAFSA past presidents, self-care, and how to plan for crisis response.

Nancy earned an MA in Intercultural Relations through the Intercultural Communication Institute and has an MA specializing in Creative Writing from Rutgers University.

Nancy is currently working on a book and consulting! Nancy served as associate director of student services at NYU's Office of International Student and Scholar Services. Nancy also worked at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and in a one-person office at Hendrix College, a residential liberal arts college. She worked at Clark (community) College as the International Educational Planner. Primarily working with international students, Nancy has advised scholars and students wishing to study abroad .

Nancy is committed to advocacy, training, and putting theory into practice to create more understanding and justice in the world.

Anita V. Gaines

Director
University of Houston International Student & Scholar Services

Anita Gaines is dir. of international student and scholar services at the University of Houston. She has a MEd in ed psych and a bachelors in music teacher ed from UH. She served as chair of the Council of Advisors to Foreign Students and Scholars and past chair of NAFSA Region III and the Membership Engagement Committee. She served as NAFSA’s chair of the Subcommittee on Ethical Practice, and Ethics Coordinator from January 2007 to December 2010. In 2011 she received the Homer Higbee Award for Distinguished Service. She is coordinator of the NAFSA Christian SIG.

Shinn Ko

Director
Emory University

Shinn Ko serves as Director of International Student and Scholar Services at Emory University. She has presented numerous sessions and workshops at NAFSA conferences. She has also held various leadership positions within NAFSA including the Leadership Development Committee, Chair of KCISSS Professional Development Subcommittee, etc.

Ali Soltanshahi

Director, ISSS
Vanderbilt University

Ali Soltanshahi serves as director of ISSS at Vanderbilt University. He has been in the field of International Education since 2001 and has served as a retention, immigration and orientation advisor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, advisor to international students, scholars and their dependents and manager of student services at Iowa State University. Soltanshahi has served various leadership roles with NAFSA at state, regional and national levels.
