Sharing Warmth in Cold Climates: Regional Cooperation in Arctic Studies

This session presents two case studies of regional cooperation to support arctic studies. The first case study presents English language degrees jointly administered by Nordic countries. The second case study explores a cooperative network of universities known as the University of the Arctic.

Marjo Somari

Head of Communications
Study in the Nordic Countries - Norway, Finland, Denmark and Iceland

Marjo Somari works with the Finnish National Agency for Education (EDUFI), where she heads the communications team and works with promoting Finnish Higher Education under the Study in Finland brand. She holds two Master's degrees from the University of Helsinki, one in Arts (TOEFL) and one in Social Sciences (Communications). Her specialities include second language learning and intercultural communication. She is an experienced trainer and facilitator.

Fridrika Hardardottir

Director
University of Iceland

Fridrika Hardardottir is the Director of the International Office at the University of Iceland.  She received MS and PhD in Immunobiology from Yale University, and did research on autoimmune diseases at Landspitali University Hospital and a start-up pharmaceutical company. In 2007 she started working at the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture in the Division of Science and Higher Education, where her responsibilities included serving as the Secretary General for the Science and Technology Policy Council of Iceland. Fridrika joined the University of Iceland in 2013, and in addition to being the Director of the International Office she holds the position as the Secretary General for the National Rectors Conference and serves on several boards including the Fulbright Commission Board.

Morten Overgaard

Head of International Affairs
Technical University of Denmark - Lyngby DK-2800

Morten Overgaard is since 2012 Head of International Affairs at Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Morten Overgaard oversees all matters relating to incoming and outgoing mobility of students, including DTU's agreements with partner institutions. Morten Overgaard is responsible for the development and implementation of DTU´s strategy for attraction and retention of highly qualified international students.
From 2007-2012 Morten Overgaard was Head of various International offices at the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Research, including Manager of Study in Denmark.
From 2000-2007 Morten Overgaard was heavily involved in the Development of several national strategies for internationalisation of higher education.
