Global Partner Session: Cheating on Standardized Tests: The Constant Evolution of Testing Security

As technology becomes increasingly sophisticated, so do efforts to cheat on standardized tests. In this session, the head of security at ETS describes the evolution of cheating and the serious, and sometimes humorous, methods used. The presenters will discuss how ETS continually innovates to meet evolving security challenges.

Michelle Hampton

Director, Global Client Relations, GRE & TOEFL
ETS

Michelle Hampton is the Director for Global Client Relations for the GRE® and TOEFL® programs at ETS. Ms. Hampton is responsible for supporting and communicating with higher education institutions and government agencies around the world in the shared goal of providining fair and equal access to higher education and student mobility. In this role, she works to ensure awareness and encourage best practices in using GRE and TOEFL scores.
Prior to joining ETS in 2003, Ms. Hampton enjoyed a 16 year career in undergraduate admissions.

Ray Nicosia

Executive Director, Office of Testing Integrity
ETS

Ray Nicosia is the Executive Director of the Office of Testing Integrity for Educational Testing Service. He oversees a staff of 70 that is responsible for the security of all high stakes paper- and computer-based testing programs for ETS. In the 22 years since assuming his current responsibilities, Mr. Nicosia has been a leader in the industry, implementing multiple prevention and detection test security techniques to better serve ETS and its’ clients. His investigations have resulted in actions taken by federal and local law enforcement agencies, civil prosecutions and the closings of test centers. Mr. Nicosia is frequently quoted by the media as an expert in academic integrity issues and has represented ETS in business development issues on six continents. He joined ETS in 1989. Mr. Nicosia holds a Masters in Business and Organizational Security Management from Webster University, and a B.A. from William Paterson University.
