Navigating and Troubleshooting the 24-Month STEM OPT Extension

Navigating the 24-month STEM OPT extension can be a complex endeavor. This session examines tough questions such as eligibility, required documentation, E-Verify numbers, Form I-983, six-month reports and self-evaluations, Requests for Evidence from USCIS, H-1B cap-gap extensions, and when to recommend that students consult an immigration attorney. This session was selected as the Region X conference highlight.

Rebecca Greenstrom

Associate Director
New York University Office of Global Services

Rebecca Greenstrom is the Associate Director of the Office of Global Services - Brooklyn location at New York University. She previously worked as an International Student Advisor/SEVIS Manager at New York University and SEVIS Coordinator at The New School. In her current position, Rebecca works primarily with international students and scholars in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields. She has presented at NAFSA and other conferences on the STEM OPT extension, technology, batch software, social media, and assessment. Rebecca holds a bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in Higher Education/Student Personnel Administration from New York University.

Emily Anderson

Associate Dean ISSS
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Emily Anderson is the Associate Dean for International Services for Students and Scholars at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In this position she serves as the PDSO and RO. Prior to her work at RPI she worked at the University of Illinios at Chicago's International Services Office and Loyola University Chicago's Office for International Programs. She received her MA in Cultural and Educational Policy Studies and her BA in International Studies at Loyola University Chicago. Emily has visited many countries in Europe, South and Central America, and Asia. She also lived in Germany for 3 1/2 years while in the U.S. Army. Emily has presented at the NAFSA Region X upstate conference on the updates and challenges of STEM OPT.

Ellen Mazujian

International Student Advisor
New York University Office of Global Services

Ellen Mazujian is an International Student Advisor at New York University, based at NYU’s School of Engineering in Brooklyn. She is responsible for advising international students, coordinating programs for international students, and working on STEM-related forms, website updates, and internal office procedures consistent with the STEM OPT immigration regulations. Ellen studied abroad in Spain and has travelled to countries in Europe and Latin America. Previously, she served as an assistant paralegal at Fragomen, a corporate immigration law firm, and a program assistant at the Global Education Center at Montclair State University in New Jersey. She received her MA in International Studies from Old Dominion University in Virginia.
