Discuss how research and assessment supports diversity and growth in education abroad. Individuals at all knowledge levels are encouraged to share perspectives and raise questions.

Louis Berends

Director of Strategic & International Partnerships
Syracuse University

Dr. Louis Berends as worked extensively in international education at U.S. colleges, universities and non-profits since 2000. Lou holds a Ph.D. (Loyola University Chicago, 2011) in cultural and educational policy studies with a concentration in comparative and international education. He has studied at Brunel University (Uxbridge, UK), the University of Oxford (St. Catherine's College), and in Rome, Italy and has visited and conducted research in numerous countries. Lou has presented many papers in various settings including Harvard's Graduate School of Education, the Comparative and International Education Society (CIES), the Forum on Education Abroad, and NAFSA: Association of International Educators (among others). He enjoys reading, music, and anything outdoors. Lou is currently Director of Strategic & International Partnerships at Syracuse University.

Emily Gorlewski

Associate Director, Study Abroad
Wesleyan University

Emily Gorlewski is Associate Director of Study Abroad at Wesleyan University. She also serves as the Research and Scholarship Network Leader of the Teaching, Learning and Scholarship Knowledge Community. Emily has contributed to the Review of Global Studies Literature and the Guide to Education Abroad for NAFSA, and presented workshops and sessions at the conferences of International Educators of Illinois (IEI), NAFSA Region V, and the NAFSA Annual Conference. She was a study abroad adviser and outreach and programming coordinator at Northern Illinois University from 2005-2009. She completed her M.S.Ed. at Northern Illinois University in 2008 and her Ed.D. in the International Educators program at the University of Minnesota in 2016. In 2010, Emily was selected for a Fulbright award for the U.S.-Germany International Education Administrators Program.
