Shingo Ashizawa

Professor
Toyo University

Shingo Ashizawa is a professor at Toyo University in Tokyo. His research involves the comparative study of higher education management and quality analysis of the internationalization review process. Currently, Prof. Ashizawa is leading a joint-research project supported by the Japanese government agency JSPS. The project is focusing on foreign credential evaluation and the comparative study of the National Qualification Framework. Prof. Ashizawa is also serving as Deputy Secretary General for UMAP (University Mobility in Asia and the Pacific) as of 2016. His publications include "Educational mobility and the role of UMAP in the Asia-Pacific region"(2017), “The role of Higher Education in Development of Global Jinzai-Global competence and Leaning Outcome Assessment ”(2014) and “Strategies and Assessment for Internationalization in US Higher Education” (2008) .

Gabriele Schmiegel

Gabriele Schmiegel is the Director of sponsored student programs at the University of Minnesota. She also serves as the liaison between the international student and scholar office and the university's student insurance office. Originally from Germany, she came to Minnesota as an exchange student and has worked in international education since 1995. She received her MA in political science from the University of Minnesota She is a frequent trainer for NAFSA workshops pertaining to immigration regulations, recruitment, and intercultural communication and has been a NAFSA Academy coach twice. From 2014-2016, she served as co-chair of NAFSA's Sponsored Programs Administration Member Interest Group. From 2017-2018, she was the Region IV ISSS NAFSA Rep and a member of the Trainer Corps Preparation Training Team.

David B. Woodward

President
American Consortium of Universities

David B. Woodward is President of the American Consortium of Universities; from 1998 to 2016 he was President & CEO of Associates in Cultural Exchange. He is also Principal for DAVID WOODWARD & ASSOCIATES LLC, and Special Assistant for International Relations for Seattle Pacific University. Woodward was born in Iran where he spent his early youth and developed a fascination for languages and cultures of the world. As a result, he became fluent in Persian, French, and Arabic, studied a variety of other languages, and has traveled to over 50 countries. Following studies at Carleton College and the University of Washington, he received a National Resource Fellowship in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization. Woodward holds four degrees from the University of Washington, including a Master of Education in Higher Education with a specialization in Teaching English as a Second Language, a Master of Arts in Near Eastern Languages and Civilization, a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics, and a Bachelor of Arts in History. Besides teaching for A.C.E. in the 1980s, Woodward taught English as a foreign language at Kuwait University and has taught Modern Middle East History for Seattle Pacific University. He has worked with organizations in Oman, Kazakhstan, Russia, Switzerland, Japan, Korea, Australia, and numerous U.S. states. Woodward is the Sponsored Program Administration Liaison for NAFSA’s International Enrollment Management Knowledge Community as well as the Co-Chair for NAFSA’s Middle East Member Interest Group, a member of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce-appointed District Export Council for Washington State, the Nominations Committee of the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation, the Board of Directors of the Seattle Rotary Club, the Advisory Board of the Persian & Iranian Studies Department of the University of Washington, & the International Affairs Advisory Board of the City of Seattle.
