Join this roundtable discussion on measures that can promote international students’ adjustment, safety, and success. This discussion focuses on easy-to-implement practices to manage crisis situations.

Maria Anastasiou

Executive Director
Appalachian State University

Maria Anastasiou is the Executive Director of the Office of International Education and Development at Appalachian State University. She works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor to implement Appalachian’s Strategic Plan and Internationalization Strategic Plan and manages the day-to-day operations of OIED. She works closely with colleagues from academic and administrative departments on campus to assess OIED programs and to develop and implement policies and procedures for the office to better achieve the QEP goals of Appalachian State. She received her BA in Economics and International Studies from the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill and her MA and Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of South Carolina. Prior to joining Appalachian State University, Maria served as the Director of International Programs at USC-Aiken and as the Director of the Lifelong Learning Program financed by the European Union at Frederick University in Cyprus. During her graduate career, she worked at the Walker Institute of International and Area Studies at USC Columbia as the Administrative Director of the Fulbright American Studies Institute from 2004-2007, a program financed by the US Department of State. Maria has taught numerous classes on Foreign Policy and International Relations and likes to teach college-level classes when time permits. She is a native of Cyprus and came to the US in 1994 on a Fulbright Scholarship for her college education.

Christopher Shirley

Director, Business Development and Programs
Georgetown University Center for Intercultural Education & Development (CIED)

Mr. Shirley has over 25 years experience designing and directing innovative leadership, workforce development, public diplomacy and executive education programs. Mr. Shirley is the director of the Student Leaders Program (sponsored by the State Department) which offers summer leadership institutes to university students from the Middle East and North Africa. He is also responsible for short-term (non-credit) educational study tours at Georgetown University CIED. He has long-term experience in ISSS programming for participants (youth, students, and professionals) from Latin America and the Middle East. His expertise include needs assessment, project design, proposal writing, public relations, and monitoring-evaluation.
