Leveraging Cocurricular Learning Frameworks: Engaging Faculty, Students, and Technology

By exploring models of cocurricular learning in education abroad, learn how to better engage faculty in cocurricular global learning, validate the integration of cocurricular and academic programs, engage student learning, and utilize innovative technology. Participants in this session partake in small group discussions on how these models can be utilized on their campuses.

Lisette Montoto

Vice President, Academic Affairs
International Studies Abroad

Lisette Montoto is the Vice President, Academic Affairs for International Studies Abroad (ISA), a third party provider of study abroad programs. She leads the Academic Affairs department at ISA, oversees curriculum development and assessment across all ISA programs, the implementation of the ISA Bridging Cultures Program and Discovery Model and it's integration with Schoology for all programs. She has led student programs to Costa Rica and traveled extensively throughout Latin America. Previously, Lisette worked at the office of International Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia, where she managed both international exchange and community outreach programs. Lisette has presented at NAFSA, ASHE and AERA annual conferences and her academic research focuses on models of U.S. cross-border higher education. Lisette's most recent co-authored publication is Universities and the Knowledge Hubs of the Developing World: An in-depth look at the City of Knowledge in the Republic of Panama. She received her MA in Spanish from Florida State University and her PhD in Higher Education from the University of Georgia.

Beth M. Laux

Director for Learning Abroad
University of Utah

Beth Laux is the Director for Learning Abroad at the University of Utah. She is responsible for education abroad strategic planning, program development, and policy coordination. Throughout her career, Beth has served in a volunteer capacity regionally and nationally to advance education abroad initiatives. She has taught political science and Spanish, and has directed study abroad programs throughout Latin America and Europe. Beth has also participated in a variety of research and publishing initiatives on topics such as immigration enforcement, intercultural competence, and high impact practices. Beth has a B.A. in Spanish & Political Science from Aquinas College and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Toledo. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Education at Northeastern University.

Christine Oakley

Director Global Learning
Washington State University

Christine Oakley has been the Director of Global Learning in the Office of International Programs at Washington State University since 2012. A primary goal of the Global Learning Department is to ensure that all students graduate with global competencies gained through their academic programs of study, education abroad, and various co-curricular opportunities such as the Global Leadership Certificate and Global Case Competition. She works with a team of five professional international educators who are engaged in all aspects of campus internationalization. Chris has a Bachelors in Sociology from UC San Diego, a Master in Public Health from UCLA and a PhD in Sociology from Washington State University. In addition to her director responsibilities, she teaches in the leadership certificate program, facilitates the case competition, and manages a local health and human service non-profit.
