Redesigning First-Year Experience Curriculum for International Students: Blended Learning Approach

Explore a first-year seminar curriculum redesign by a nonacademic unit to support incoming international students. In this interactive presentation, participants discuss institutional challenges and explore model practices for using academic technology and experiential learning to promote engagement and increase inquiry and social justice on campus.

Tetyana Schneider has spent more than 15 years in international education. The major part was spent in 2-year colleges where she provided support to F1/J1 international students and later to domestic students who traveled to study abroad. She is committed to improving international students' learning experiences and has been enhancing her teaching skills by applying active learning approaches and using technology. Currently Tetyana is working at UW-Madison as the Student Advisement Center Coordinator. In addition to managing the front desk operation of the International Student Services and serving as a DSO, she teaches a first-year seminar to international students.

Samantha McCabe

Assistant Director for SEVIS Compliance
University of Wisconsin-Madison

Samantha McCabe currently serves as Assistant Director for SEVIS Compliance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she provides immigration advice and support services to over 6,000 F and J students. In this role she also manages institutional SEVIS compliance and ISS IT support, including batch software maintenance. Samantha also serves as the social media and website coordinator for the Wisconsin Association of International Educators, Inc. (WAIE), and has contributed to the F-1 advising basics pre-conference workshop. Samantha has nearly seven years of experience in the field of international education, including one year as an ESL instructor in Brazil, two years as international recruiter and admissions counselor, and her positions as international student advisor and assistant director with International Student Services at UW-Madison.

Samantha earned her MS in Educational Leadership & Policy Analysis with a specialization in Global Higher Education from UW-Madison in 2017 and her BA in International Relations with a focus in African Studies from Beloit College in 2010.
