In an extensive case study, international education leaders learn about and apply the theory of comprehensive internationalization. Participants develop strategies for surmounting barriers to implementation through strengthened interpersonal leadership.

Associate Consultant
Ruffalo Noel Levitz

Having served as a senior international officer for 18 years, Deborah Pierce is now Associate Consultant with the enrollment management firm Ruffalo Noel Levitz. At Northern Illinois University she was associate vice president for international affairs and adjunct assistant professor of French. She earned the PhD in linguistics from the University of Michigan. Pierce’s primary professional interests are international student recruitment and retention and comprehensive internationalization. A NAFSA Life Member, she served on the NAFSA Board as Vice President for Education and Professional Development and is the current coordinator for the Phase II (retiree) Member Interest Group.

John K. Hudzik

NAFSA Senior Scholar for Internationalization
Michigan State University

John Hudzik, PhD, serves as chair of the NAFSA Senior Fellows for Internationalization and professor of criminal justice at Michigan State University. From 1995 to 2010, he was dean of International Studies and Programs at MSU and also served as vice president for global engagement and strategic projects and acting provost and vice president of academic affairs. Hudzik is past president and chair of the board of directors at NAFSA and past president of the Association of International Administrators (AIEA). He has served on numerous international policy and advisory boards for international development, frequently speaks at national and international conferences on the direction of global higher education and internationalization and publishes regularly on these topics.

Penelope J. Pynes

Associate Provost, International Programs
University of North Carolina-Greensboro

Penelope Pynes is Senior International Officer (SIO) at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), leading internationalization efforts, directing the University’s Global Engagement Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and promoting student/faculty exchange. She is a past chair on NAFSA’s International Education Leadership Knowledge Community (IEL-KC) and is currently President of AIEA. A regular presenter on comprehensive internationalization and co-designer of several SIO training programs, she has a doctorate in Germanic linguistics from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.
