Do your international students know where to turn when they are experiencing issues that impact their safety? Will they use available campus resources? Learn about cultural barriers impacting student decisions, and how to encourage students to understand their rights and responsibilities in the United States and seek help without fear of repercussion.

Lorenda (Rendy) Schrader has worked in the field of international education for over 30 years.

After completing degrees in political science and French from Indiana University, she moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked at NAFSA for 16 years. When her twins were born, the family moved back home to Indiana, where they intend to stay.

She has been at Indiana University for 18 years, and is currently serving as the Director of International Student and Scholar Advising at Indiana University, responsible for serving 7,000 international students, and almost 1,000 scholars, H-1B's and PRs in an 8-campus system.

Marieta Chemishanova

Director, International Student Services
Valencia College

Marieta Chemishanova is the Director of International Student Services (ISS) at Valencia College in Orlando, FL. She oversees the daily functions and operations of the ISS Office on three campuses and provides higher level of immigration, academic, and personal advising to F and J international students. Originally from Bulgaria, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from her home country and came to the United States in 2000 as an F-1 international student. She earned a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership Studies: College Student Development from Oklahoma State University and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership–Higher Education from University of Central Florida. Dr. Chemishanova has over 15 years of experience in higher education and has dedicated more than 9 of them to international education. Prior to joining Valencia College, she gained diverse experience working in higher education at Oklahoma State University, Texas A&M University, and Rollins College. Dr. Chemishanova also serves as NAFSA’s International Student and Scholar Services Knowledge Community Regulatory Practice Coordinator (RPC).
