Building Your Professional Network and Developing Competencies in International Education

Explore resources and create a learning plan for professional growth. Through self-assessment, small-group work, and roundtable discussions, participants develop networking skills and competencies in international education. Presenters from diverse institutions and roles share the impact their NAFSA Academy participation has had on their career advancement.

Pedro Lozada

International Program Manager
Johns Hopkins University-Center for Talented Youth

Pedro Lozada is an international program manager for the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY). He coordinates projects to improve the experience of international students of high academic potential attending programs in the U.S. and provides educational advising to international organizations working with CTY. Pedro joined CTY in 2010 and managed residential sites for U.S. and international students in grades 5-10. He has served as program director for CTY programs in Kuwait, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. Prior to joining CTY, Pedro was a study abroad coordinator at the Universidad de las Americas Puebla where he earned his BS in computer systems engineering, magna cum laude, and his MBA (concentration international business). He also holds an MS in international studies from Oklahoma State University. Pedro is a member of the 2016 NAFSA Academy for International Education.

Noora Alie

Assistant Director for International Student Services
Slippery Rock University

Noora Alie has been at Slippery Rock University since 2015. She currently serves as the Assistant Director for International Student Service, Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer. She advises international students form the time of arrival during orientation programs, to immigration, academics, and cross-cultural adjustments. Prior to joining Slippery Rock, Noora worked at Robert Morris University as the Admissions Counselor for International Program. She earned her Master of Science in Global Leadership from Duquesne University.

Shya M. Erdman

Director, International Student and Scholar Services
Juniata College Center for International Education

Shya Erdman is currently the Director of International Student and Scholar Services at Juniata College, where she serves as the Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer. Her primary role is international student support services, immigration assistance/advising, and programming. Shya is an alumni of the NAFSA Academy class ‘13 and a NAFSA Trainer Corp member.

Lois L. Johnson

Director of International Education
Grove City College

Lois Larson Johnson is the Director of the Office of International Education at Grove City College, where she also serves as Professor of Education, sharing her extensive training and skills in curriculum development and assessment. She is a past NAFSA Academy Coach, Region VIII, and has served on Region VIII Leadership Team. She currently serves her discipline through state, national, and international presentations, chairs conferences, and maintains active professional affiliations with state, national, and international associations.
