A panel of experts presents trends in demand for U.S. higher education in emerging markets and best methods to crack those markets to achieve campus diversity.

Gabriela Zelaya

Global Education Team Leader
U.S. Department of Commerce

Gabriela Zelaya is the Global Education Team Leader for the U.S. Commercial Service, U.S. Department of Commerce Education Team. She manages and overseas U.S. Commercial Service Education Team programs that assist U.S. education institutions with international student recruitment. She also overseas CS collaboration with partners both domestically and abroad.

In California, she led the development of Study California for the State of California and is also the U.S. Commercial Service Liaison on the Board of Directors. The Study California initiative was developed for the purposes of attracting international students to California's diverse programs and institutions of higher education. Gabriela also led the development of the "U.S. International Education Stakeholder Roundtables" held in D.C. and NAFSA, and is leading the U.S. International Education Initiative within the U.S. International Trade Administration at Department of Commerce to assist the U.S. international education industry to compete globally.

Vinita Bali

Director, Global
Stanford University

Vinita Bali serves as Dean of International Student Programs, a position with cross-over responsibility for the two colleges within the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. Prior to joining the community colleges, Vinita served as Managing Director of the Center for Global Law & Policy at Santa Clara University School of Law. She held various faculty and administrative positions at Santa Clara Law from 2002-2015. Santa Clara Law ran the largest international programs of any other US law school. In addition to serving as Dean at the Foothill-De Anza Community Colleges, she also currently continues to teach as a visiting lecturer at Santa Clara University School of Law.

Christine A. Farrugia

Deputy Head of Research
Institute of International Education

Christine Farrugia is Deputy Head of Research at the Institute of International Education (IIE) where she leads Open Doors, a large-scale annual survey of international educational exchange in the United States and oversees other international academic mobility research. She has over fifteen years of experience as a university administrator and researcher of higher education and regularly authors research reports and articles on international higher education. In 2014 she was awarded the Harold Josephson Award for Professional Promise in International Education by the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA). She holds a Ph.D. from SUNY-Albany and M.A. and Ed.M. degrees from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Mallik Sundharam

Vice President – Business Development
ELS Educational Services, Inc.

Mr. Mallik Sundharam currently serves as the Vice President for ELS Educational Services overseeing Business Development and Sales efforts world-wide. In his previous positon as a Regional Director of South and South East Asia, Mr. Sundharam was based in India to establish the ELS International Education Pathways Office head quartered at Chennai, India and its immediate expansion of branch offices in Bangalore, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and the recent establishment of more than 500 Satellite Counselling Centres. He headed the strategic development plans in India for ELS to develop Unbiased Counselling and Admissions service offices in all major cities throughout India. In July 2014, Mr. Sundharam was instrumental in establishing the first campus based ELS Language centre in South Asia at SRM University in Chennai creating a pathways program for International students exploring India as a study destination and for Indian students looking to enhance their English skills before embarking their studying abroad journey. Mr. Sundharam joined ELS with more than 10 years of diverse and rich education industry and study abroad experience from Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) in Philadelphia.
