Engaging Faculty for International Student Academic Success and Cultural Integration

This session draws on both research and program development experience to discuss the importance of faculty in supporting international students’ academic success and cultural integration. Presenters will identify key challenges for international students and provide practical ways to encourage faculty to help students meet these challenges.

Learning Objectives:

Angela Jeon-Huh

Director of Global Education and Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Angela Jeon-Huh started her career in higher education, focusing on underrepresented student population such as international undergraduate and graduate students in 2006 as an adjunct professor and higher education senior administrator. Currently, she is a Global Education and Inclusive Excellence Consultant and Adjunct Professor at Penn State Lehigh Valley while she continues to be an active member and a presenter for the Association of International Educators, NAFSA, Academic Impression, AI and The Global Community for Academic Advising, NACADA. Dr. Jeon-Huh earned her Bachelors of Arts in International Politics at Penn State University, Master’s Degree in Leadership Development at Penn State University, and completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management at Drexel University. Dr. Jeon-Huh’s dissertation publication topic is: "Exploring the Influence of the Pre-Departure Orientation on the Undergraduate International Students’ Cultural and Academic Adjustment at Drexel University: The Example of Students from China."

Christine F. Brown

Penn State University

Christine F. Brown is the Coordinator for Brandywine Learning at Penn State Brandywine where she is also the Co-Coordinator of the Brandywine Summer Bridge Programs and the Multilingual Student Course Cluster. She teaches language and literacy courses and American Studies courses on her campus. Her scholarly interests include developmental education and working with multilingual students. She recently earned her Ed. D. in Higher Education where she developed a survey instrument and researched faculty attitudes towards validating their students..

Deborah Ousey

Coordinator, Multilingual Student Programs
Penn State Brandywine

Debbie Lamb Ousey, M.A. TESOL is the Coordinator of Multilingual Student Programs, Co-Coordinator of the Multilingual Student Course Cluster, advisor to the campus Multicultural Club, and campus liaison for Penn State’s Directorate of International Student and Scholar Advising (DISSA). She has previously taught in Thailand and has traveled to 13 countries in Europe and Asia. Her book Teaching Developmental Immigrant Students in Undergraduate Programs: A Practical Guide (co-authored with Dr. Myra Goldschmidt) addresses the academic and holistic needs of a growing multilingual student population by sharing practices used in Penn State Brandywine’s highly successful Multilingual Student Course Cluster. Her latest publication is a co-authored chapter that discusses a partnership between her multilingual First-Year Composition students and pre-service teachers in West Chester University’s M.A. TESOL program. She has presented multiple times at International TESOL and has been an invited speaker and plenary at several regional conferences on topics of multilingual and international student success and integration.

Meredith C. Doran

Meredith Doran is Director of the English for Professional Purposes Intercultural Center (EPPIC) at Penn State University Park. She has taught second languages, sociolinguistics, and applied linguistics for over 20 years at universities in the U.S. and abroad. Her recent conference presentations and research projects focus on developing programming on advanced academic and professional English for international students & scholars, teacher education, language assessment, and promoting diversity and inclusion in higher education. She frequently leads workshops for multilingual students & scholars on academic and professional English, teaching & learning in the American university setting, intercultural communication, and inclusive teaching practices.
