Chinese Students at U.S. Universities: Integration, Challenges, and Post-Graduation Outcomes

This session elucidates the challenges and aspirations of Chinese students as they acclimate themselves to the U.S. university classroom. Presenters will also explore the career choices that Chinese students make after completing their undergraduate degrees at U.S. universities.

Karin Fischer

International Correspondent
The Chronicle of Higher Education

A correspondent with The Chronicle of Higher Education and a longtime international reporter, Karin Fischer covers the business of international education and the globalization of higher education, including competition for foreign students, activities by American colleges overseas, policies and programs that affect international activities of American colleges, and the internationalization of the college experience. She also writes about the relationship between colleges and the economy. A recipient of East-West Center’s Jefferson Fellowship for study and reporting in Asia and an International Reporting Project fellowship, her work has appeared in the New York Times and Washington Monthly. She is also a research associate with the University of California at Berkeley's Center for Studies in Higher Education.

Jun Liu

Vice Provost for Global Affairs
The State University of New York at Stony Brook

Jun Liu is Vice President/Vice Provost for Global Affairs, Dean of International Academic Programs and Services, and Professor of Linguistics at Stony Brook University.  Under his leadership, Stony Brook Univeristy received NAFSA 2018 Senator Paul Simon Award for Comprehensive Internationalization. Jun served as Associate Provost for International Initiatives at Georgia State University from 2011 to 2016 and during which he helped Georgia State receive Georgia Governor’s Award for International Programs of the Year (2015) .  Jun also served as President of International TESOL, Inc. from 2006 to 2008 and he is the recipient of James E Alatis Award for Outstanding Service to TESOL in 2016.

Dennis Yang

Former Associate Director of Boston University in Beijing

Dennis Yang is former founding Associate Director of Boston University's Gateway office in Beijing. He has worked for Disney in China and has done extensive research on the social, cultural, and economic motivations compelling Chinese students to pursue higher education in America. His most recent book, "The Pursuit of the Chinese Dream in America: Chinese Undergraduate Students at American Universities," was published earlier this year. Dennis earned a doctorate in International Education from NYU, a Master's of Education from Columbia University, a Master of Arts from Duke University, and a Bachelor of Arts from Boston University.
