How Senior International Officers Leverage Data to Make Tough Decisions

Senior international officers (SIOs) must collect, analyze, and leverage data to advance internationalization priorities. In this session, panelists provide data sources and recommend unconventional approaches to mastering data in order to develop compelling arguments for securing stakeholder support. Facilitated discussions will address applicability and institution-specific needs and challenges.

Ian Wright

Director of Partnerships
World Education Services

Ian Wright is the Director of Partnerships at World Education Services (WES), a non-profit international education organization founded in 1974. Ian is an experienced administrator who served as Director of International Admissions at LIU Post for over 3 years, where he was also a DSO, and previously as Director of the Academic Counseling Center. Ian earned a master’s degree in education from Hunter College and a bachelor’s degree in industrial and labor relations from Cornell University. Ian joined WES in 2013 and currently works with education institutions and organizations to meet their internationalization priorities through research and collaboration.

Downing Thomas

Associate Provost & Dean
University of Iowa International Programs

Thomas has been Associate Provost and Dean of International Programs at the University of Iowa since July, 2008. He has also served as Associate Dean of International Programs and Chair of the Department of French and Italian. In 2005, Thomas was named Chevalier dans l'Ordre des Palmes académiques (Knight in the Order of Academic Palms) by the French government. In 2007, Thomas was elected President of the Association of Departments of Foreign Language. In 2013, he was named Honorary Professor at Hebei Normal University. Thomas has delivered invited lectures at University of Virginia, NYU, University of California-Berkeley, and Stanford University, among others. Under his leadership, the University of Iowa was selected to receive the 2017 Senator Paul Simon Award for comprehensive internationalization.

Kent Anderson

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Community & Engagement)
The University of Western Australia

Kent is Deputy Vice Chancellor (VP for Community & Engagement) at University of Western Australia. Previously he was Pro Vice Chancellor (International) at University of Adelaide and Dean of Faculty of Asian Studies at Australian National University. Earlier he was Professor of ANU College of Law and Hokkaido University Law School. He completed his tertiary studies in the US, Japan, and UK. Before academia, he was Marketing Manager of an airline in Alaska and a commercial lawyer in Hawaii.
