Faculty members are an important part of an institution’s comprehensive internationalization and the advancement of international research. This session covers innovative ways to engage faculty and incorporate them into the institutional internationalization strategy. A special focus is placed on programs in North America.
Program Manager, Membership & Services
Gabriela Valdez currently serves as Program Manager, Membershi & Services at the Consortium for North American Higher Education Collaboration (CONAHEC). She received a Ph.D. in International Education & Global Perspectives from The University of Arizona, a Master’s degree in Education with a focus in Human Development from Northern Arizona University, and a Master’s of Arts in Language, Literature & Culture in the Hispanic World from Universidad de Alcalá de Henares. Gabriela has had the opportunity to work in the field of education, both k-12 and higher education, for the last 9 years in the United States, Mexico, Spain and the Dominican Republic. Gabriela currently serves as a board member for the Council of International Higher Education and has participated in different task forces including the internationalization Task Force for the American Educational Research Association Higher Education Division and University of Arizona’s International Students Task Force. Gabriela’s dissertation centered on perceptions about classroom exclusion from Chinese international students studying in the U.S. and her research interest focuses on comparative and international higher education.

University of Colima
Genoveva Amador Fierros is the General Director for International Affairs and Academic Cooperation Office at the University of Colima (Mexico). She is former secretary of the Mexican Association for International Education (AMPEI) and former representative of Mexico in the Asia-Pacific region for the UMAP Student Connection Online program (USCO). Amador Fierros gives courses, seminars, and lectures on issues connected with the internationalization of higher education at national and international meetings, and she has coauthored four books and ten articles on the subject. She holds a masters degree in education from the University of Colima, as well as certificates in gender studies and social research techniques.
California State University-Fullerton
Dr. Kari Knutson Miller serves as Dean of University Extended Education and Associate Vice President for International Programs and Global Engagement at California State University, Fullerton. She leads multiple units including self-support programs, summer session, intersession, Open University, children’s programs, study abroad, University Semester Abroad, American Language Program, International Students and Scholars, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, and Fullerton Arboretum.
As Cal State Fullerton’s Senior International Officer, Dr. Knutson Miller has spearheaded efforts to strengthen the institution’s position as a regional university with a global outlook. Her accomplishments include launching the IPGE unit, joining the Generation Study Abroad pledge to increase student participation in study abroad, and articulating the institution’s global strategies. She has also supported Cal State Fullerton’s strategic plan through energetic engagement in efforts to promote student success and increase students’ participation in high-impact practices including study abroad, study away, Arboretum-based internships, and more.
She earned her B.S. and M.S. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and her Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Arizona State University.
