What motivates women international educators to make career changes? How do career transitions impact future professional development? Hear from four international educators at different stages of their career who have navigated significant transitions. Discover different ways to manage and utilize change in the advancement of your career.

Sandy R. Soohoo-Refaei

Director, Office of Global Studies
Point Loma Nazarene University

Sandy Soohoo-Refaei, an active member of NAFSA for more than 30 years, works with education abroad programs at Point Loma Nazarene University. She was elected to the NAFSA Board from 2013-15 as the Vice President for Professional Development & Engagement (one year) and the Vice President for Member Relations (two years). A past chair of KC ISSS - International Student and Scholar Services Knowledge Community, Sandy also served in recent years as a coach in the NAFSA Academy , and a member on the Awards Committee, Membership Committee, Ethics Subcommittee, and Trainer Corps. A life-long learner, she participated in the Fulbright International Education Administrators Program, Baden-Wurttemberg Seminar, the Summer Intercultural Communication Institute, Semester At Sea; and is a frequent presenter at NAFSA conferences and a mentor to many students and newer professionals in the field of international education.

Jennifer M. Creamer

Director, Center for Global Engagement
Robert Morris University

Jennifer Creamer, PhD, is the Director of Global Engagement at Robert Morris University where she oversees education abroad, international student services, and campus internationalization. A cultural anthropologist, Creamer has conducted qualitative research on the impact of study abroad and the international student experience. A member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps since 2010, she is an active trainer and presenter at national international education and anthropology conferences. In addition, she serves as the TLS content chair for the NAFSA 2018 National Conference. Creamer has experience studying abroad in Mexico and Japan in high school and college, teaching ESL in Japan, and leading Japanese students on short-term programs to the United States. She received her BA in anthropology and East Asian studies from Colby College and her PhD in cultural anthropology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Rebecca H. Pisano

Associate Dean, International & Off-Campus Study
Stevenson University

Rebecca Pisano has worked in the field of education abroad since 2001. She is the Associate Dean, International & Off-Campus Study at Stevenson University. Formerly she was the Director of International Programs at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito, the Director of Study Abroad at Towson University, and also worked at New York University, the University of California-Los Angeles, and Chapman University. Rebecca regularly presents at conferences including NAFSA, Forum, and CIEE. Her research interests focus on international service-learning. Rebecca holds a B.A. from Miami University (Ohio), a M.A. from George Washington University, and a Ph.D. from UCLA.

Malaika M. Serrano

Associate Vice President, University Partnerships
International Studies Abroad

Malaika Marable Serrano is an Associate Vice President for Strategic Partnerships at International Studies Abroad (ISA), and has been actively engaged in international education for nearly twenty years. Prior to joining ISA, she served as Executive Director for Academic and Field Programs with Semester at Sea, Associate Director for Global Communities Living-Learning Program at the University of Maryland, Outreach and Alumni Officer for the U.S. Department of State's Critical Language Program, Associate Director for Education Abroad and International Enrollment Management at NAFSA, and Study Abroad Coordinator at the University of Tennessee.

She received a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Southern California and a M.A. in College Student Personnel from the University of Maryland. Significant international experiences include a semester abroad in Australia, J-term study in Brazil, a year teaching English in Venezuela, leading study abroad programs to the Dominican Republic, and teaching Global Leadership in Colombia.
