This session explores important ethical areas of consideration when planning and running international programs with a service-learning component. Focusing on the ethical impacts on the host communities, presenters discuss challenges and provide practical ideas that can help schools shape their programs to achieve the most positive outcomes for all.

Kaya Responsible Travel

Heilwig Jones is the Founder and Director of Kaya Responsible Travel and has been involved with service abroad since the Asian Tsunami relief effort in 2004. Passionate about conservation and international development, she presents in international education and adventure travel forums across North America and Europe on the virtues of volunteering and service learning as a route to mutual learning, resume development, skills and capacity building and developing educated, compassionate global citizens. Kaya continues to lead the field in its ethical approaches to working in development.

Jason A. Kinnear

Interim Associate Dean of Study Abroad
University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

Jason Kinnear is a passionate higher education executive with experience in education abroad, service-learning and community engagement, program development and administration. Working in international education since 1998, he has held positions in international students & scholar services, education abroad, and service-learning at the University of Northern Colorado, Colorado State University, and the University of Missouri. He currently serves as Assistant Dean of Study Abroad at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. These positions have focused on exchange, study abroad, faculty-led, service, and internship programs and touched on all aspects of education abroad program development and administration. He is active in the NAFSA, previously holding regional & national leadership positions and is on Trainer Corps. Kinnear received a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of Northern Colorado and is completing a PhD in Educational Leadership from Colorado State University.
