This session shares the results of NAFSA’s commissioned research on pathway programs in the United States, including the characteristics of institutions that partner with private providers and the perceptions of international educators regarding rationales and considerations for third-party pathway partnerships.

Joann Ng Hartmann

Senior Director
NAFSA: Association of International Educators

Joann Ng Hartmann is the Senior Director for International Enrollment Management-International Student and Scholar Services at NAFSA: Association of International Educators. The IEM-ISS Services department serves as a comprehensive source of knowledge for professionals working with incoming international students and scholars including recruitment, admissions, intensive English programs, advising and support services. In her capacity, Joann provides strategic staff leadership for professional development, programs and services related to IEM-ISS. Prior to joining NAFSA, Joann spent 18+ years at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she was responsible for managing the student and scholar services unit, including institutional compliance, orientation, and student/scholar advising support services. Joann was an active volunteer for NAFSA in various regional and national capacities. She has presented many workshops and sessions at regional and national conferences. She holds an MS in communication from the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

Rahul Choudaha

EVP of Global Engagement & Research
Studyportals

Dr. Rahul Choudaha is Executive Vice President of Global Engagement and Research at Studyportals. Operating out of San Francisco Bay Area, Choudaha leads the thought leadership and institutional relationship with higher education institutions, professional associations, government bodies and related stakeholders. Previously, Choudaha worked for over seven years at World Education Services (WES) in New York City. As the Chief Knowledge Officer and Senior Director of Strategic Development, he raised organization profile, built research capabilities, deepened institutional relationships and launched innovative services.
Choudaha blogs and tweets as DrEducation. He is a recognized strategist with expertise in student mobility and enrollment, global engagement and transnational education. For over a decade, Choudaha has advocated for future-oriented, data-informed internationalization strategies through his presentations, consultations, and publications. He is also affiliated with the Center for Studies in Higher Education at the University of California, Berkeley. Previously, he has taught graduate courses on International Higher Education at New York University and Baruch College.
Choudaha has presented nearly 150 sessions at professional conferences including EAIE, NAFSA, APAIE, and AIEA, and has been quoted in over 300 publications including the BBC, Time, NPR and The Wall Street Journal. He was also the principal investigator of two national research reports commissioned by NAFSA and served on the chair-stream of International Education Leadership Knowledge Community (2014-2016). He is an elected member of the General Council of the European Association of International Educators (EAIE), Amsterdam and serves on the Board of Directors of InterExchange, New York.
Choudaha holds a doctorate in higher education administration, master’s in business management, and a bachelor’s in electronics engineering.

Mark A. Hoffman

Vice Provost for International Programs
Oregon State University

Mark Hoffman has served as the Vice Provost for International Programs at Oregon State University since July 15, 2015. He came to International Programs from the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (CPHHS), where he joined the Athletic Training faculty in 2000 and served as Associate Dean for Undergraduate Programs from 2011 – 2014. Mark earned his PhD from Indiana University in the area of Motor Control with and minor in Neuroscience. When he’s not working, Mark enjoys spending time with his wife Laura and daughter Sydney in addition to photography and mountain biking.

Heather Housley

Director, International Student & Scholar Services
Georgia State University International Student and Scholar Services

Heather Housley is director of international student and scholar services at Georgia State University in Atlanta. After serving as a Peace Corps volunteer in Senegal, Housley received her master's degree in higher education & student affairs from The Ohio State University. She is originally from east Tennessee and has been involved in international education since 1997. She has served as chair of the Georgia Association of International Educators, Region VII NAFSA, the Georgia International Leadership Conference, and is a frequent presenter at state, regional, and national conferences.
