This session presents traditional and experimental models of advising caseloads and explores some of the pros and cons of each at different types of institutions. This session is geared toward practitioners and managers seeking new ideas for their office structures.

Charmagne Herlien

Director, International Employment & Scholar Services
University of Illinois-Chicago

Charmagne Herlien is the Director, International Employment & Scholar Services at the University of Illinois-Chicago. Prior to this position, she served as the Associate Director, International Scholar Services, at the California Institute of Technology for three years. In regards to NAFSA involvement, Charmagne most recently served as the NAFSA Regulatory Ombudsperson for Scholars in Region XII from 2013 to 2015. Prior to this role, she was a member of the NAFSA International Student and Scholar Regulatory Practice, Exchange Visitor Program Committee (ISS-RP EVP.) Through this subcommittee she headed a Task Force on the J-1 24-Month Bar issue in 2013. She has been involved in immigration advising, primarily for scholars, at large research institutions, for the past 15 years. Prior to advising scholars, Charmagne worked in international admissions, programming for international community college students, and teaching ESL in the U.S. and Japan. She earned her MEd in Instructional Leadership, Educational Studies from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Tami Renner

Director of International Student and Scholar Services
Creighton University Global Engagement Office

Tami Renner is the Director of International Student and Scholar Services in the Global Engagement Office at Creighton University. She earned her BA in elementary education and her MA in higher, adult, and lifelong education. Before joining Creighton, Renner was the associate director of ISSS at Loyola University-Chicago. She has worked with international students and scholars at Adler University, Wayne State University, and Northwestern University. She is the current Chair-Elect of NAFSA's Membership Engagement Committee and has served as the chair of NAFSA's Knowledge Community for International Student and Scholar Services and Regional Affairs Committee and on the Region V team

Tricia Schueler

Assistant Director of International Student Services
University of California-San Diego

Tricia Schueler is currently the Assistant Director of International Student Services at the University of California, San Diego. She has worked in the field of international education for over 12 years and her responsibilities have included the management and coordination of advising for a staff of 15, implementing an online request portal and coordinating international orientations and outreach programs. Tricia enjoys navigating the "grey areas", and embraces the joys and challenges of advising international students. Tricia has been a member of the San Diego Professional International Educator's Round Table (SD PIER) since 2004 and has served as membership coordinator and treasurer. Prior to UC San Diego, she was the Student Services Coordinator at an English language school, directed summer camps for international high school students, and taught ESL in Japan. Tricia has her BA in Anthropology from Scripps College and her MA in International Education from New York University.

Amber Tetreau-Segura

Associate Director of Admissions, Immigration & Student Services
University of Arizona CESL

Amber Tetreau-Segura is the Associate Director of Admissions, Immigration, and Student Services at the Center for English as a Second Language (CESL) at the University of Arizona. Tetreau-Segura has been working with international students and scholars for more than a decade. She is currently the PDSO for CESL and serves as the liaison with sponsoring agencies and oversees admissions and student services for all CESL programs. Tetreau-Segura holds an MA in higher education with a concentration in international and comparative education from the University of Arizona and a BA in Spanish from Northern Arizona University. Tetreau-Segura currently serves on the International Student Subcommittee within NAFSA’s International Student and Scholar Regulatory Practice committee.
