Examine challenges facing international students and scholars. Explore options, develop strategies, make connections, and build adaptive advising skills. Through practice and practical exploration, participants return to their work setting with new ideas to connect, collaborate, and expand their work.

Kathy Gallentine

International Student Advisor
Central Washington University

Kathy Gallentine is the International Student Advisor for Central Washington University’s Westside Centers with the primary function of F-1 Student immigration advising. She has been in international education and student advising roles for 10 years at institutions including an ESL school, community/technical colleges and the university. She is active in the local Association of Washington International Student Affairs (AWISA) and served as the chair 2014-2015. In other adventures she has lived and worked in Japan, met some famous people, became a mother, and enjoys cooking, baking, sewing and crafting, but admits she isn’t “Pintrist” good at any of it.

Lisa Kosiewicz Doran

International Student Specialist
Colorado College

Lisa Kosiewicz Doran currently serves as the International Student Specialist in the Office of International Programs at Colorado College, a small, private, liberal arts institution which currently hosts approximately 230 international students and exchange visitors each year. Prior to relocating from California to Colorado with her family, she held a variety of positions in the area of international student and scholar services at several San Francisco Bay Area institutions, including serving as: the Director of the International Student and Scholar Services office at the University of San Francisco, the SEVIS Coordinator for the University of California-Berkeley’s Services for International Students and Scholars office, the International Student Advisor for U.C. Berkeley Extension's English Language Program, and the Admissions/Student Services Coordinator for the English Center for International Women at Mills College.

Lisa has enjoyed working in the field of international education for over 26 years and she appreciates opportunities to help others develop their knowledge and skills in the area of international student and scholar advising. She has been an active NAFSA member and has served in several leadership roles within NAFSA Region XII and the Region XII Northern District. Lisa has also been a presenter at local, regional and national NAFSA conferences and she is currently a member of the NAFSA Trainer Corps. Lisa previously helped co-write the curriculum, and has served as the Workshop Dean, for NAFSA's “F-1 Student Advising for Beginners” workshop. She holds an M.A. degree in International and Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco.

Jeremy Spohr

ISS Advisor
University of Pennsylvania

Jeremy Spohr has worked at the University of Pennsylvania’s International Students and Scholars Office (ISSS) since 2005, first as the J-1 Scholar Specialist and now as an Adviser to International Students and Scholars. He has expertise in F-1, J-1, H-1B, TN and E-3 advising as well as cross cultural programming. Every summer at ISSS Jeremy has co-coordinated International Student Orientation for more than 1500 incoming students.
