Develop an understanding of J-1 advising and regulatory issues including eligibility, DS-2019 issuance, health insurance, maintenance of status, extension, transfer, 212(e), repeat participation, and employment. SEVIS is discussed in relation to advising practices and procedures.
Sal Longarino is the director of the Office for International Services at Fordham University. After retiring from NYU, in 2000, he began his career at Fordham where he served 300 international students. Today, his staff has grown to five professionals serving over 3000 students. His previous roles include chair of the Study New York Consortium; NAFSA's National Chair, Knowledge Community ISSS. He has received awards including NAFSA's Advocate of the Year in 2010. He is a member of Training Corps and recently was one of the three authors creating the new version for the J1 Beginners curriculum.

Machelle has devoted her entire professional career of over 20 years to international education. After 5 years in international admissions, she switched focus to international student advising and has served students in private colleges, community colleges, and a large research institution. She has served in leadership positions at the state and regional levels, and currently serves at the national level as Region 1's Past Chair. She presents and trains frequently on regulatory and other advising topics, including F1 regulations, employment issues, and best practices in international student advising. She is Assistant Director of International Student Services at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Senior International Services Specialist

At the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, I am a Senior International Services Specialist working with both international students and scholars. I serve international students and scholars at the Anschutz Medical Campus in the School of Public Health, School of Dental Medicine, College of Nursing, School of Medicine, and School of Pharmacy. Prior to working at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, I worked at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where my focus was on international students only. Prior to that, I worked at Beloit College in the Office of International Education serving study abroad students, international students, and administering the Freeman Asia Study Grant.
International Scholar Advisor

Makbule Koksal serves as the J Scholar Advisor at University of California, Riverside. Makbule immigrated to the United States from Turkey in 2000 and is fluent in English, Turkish. She completed her BA at Ankara University. She worked 10 years at Tukey. She is a proud member of the NAFSA since 2008.
Perform duties as Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO) for SEVIS. Ensure ISC and UCR compliance with federal immigration and labor laws. Prepare and maintain DS-2019 forms for the US Department of State and following immigration laws. Provide consultations and immigration services to the J Scholars and their family members. Provide orientations, cultural and diplomatic guidance for the J Scholars according to J program guidelines. Prepare, maintain and report on J Scholar/Program files to the Department Head and the Responsible Officer. she is NAFSA Tranier corps member.
