With a focus on short-term, faculty-led programs, this workshop provides tools for creating successful partnerships between education abroad professionals and faculty on proposals, budgets, planning, orientations, and assessment. Improve communications and uncover ways to view the process from multiple perspectives.

Kathleen DeGuzman

Director, Education Abroad
Dickinson College

Katie DeGuzman is the Director for Education Abroad at Dickinson College where she supervises the education abroad team, provides leadership regarding education abroad policies, procedures and best practices, intercultural competence development and advises students on all aspects of education abroad participation. She works closely with the Associate Provost and faculty to develop and administer a portfolio of short and long-term study abroad options as well as assisting in the monitoring and evaluating of study abroad programs.

Katie earned a Bachelor of Art’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology and Classical Humanities from the University of Maryland, where she studied abroad in England and Israel. Katie holds a Master’s Degree in Student Personnel in Higher Education from the University of Florida and entered the field of International Education in 2005 as a graduate student working in International Programs at the College of Business. Katie has completed the NAFSA Academy program, is an IDI Administrator, a member of NAFSA’s Trainer Corps, a member of NAFSA's EA subcommittee on Diversity & Inclusion, a member of Diversity Abroad's Task Force on First Generation/High Financial Need Students and a Fulbright grantee to Korea.

University of Massachusetts-Lowell Office of Study Abroad

Fern MacKinnon, Director, Study Abroad & International Experiences, University of Massachusetts Lowell, oversees study abroad, international partnerships & exchanges. Within a consortium of five universities, Fern collaborates on best practices & shared systems to ensure effective student tracking & safe travel. Previous workshops/presentations include the Fulbright Leadership & Re-Entry Seminars, Massachusetts Council for International Education, NAFSA Region XI conference, NAFSA e-learning seminars, American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages conference, & the 2017 NAFSA Annual Conference. Fern holds a Master of Arts in Intercultural Relations from Lesley University. Prior to UMass Lowell, she served as Director of International Programs & Primary Designated School Official, Emmanuel College, Boston.
