Each spring the Boren Awards gives almost 270 undergrad and graduate students a two-day orientation to prepare them for long-term, immersive study in dozens of countries less-visited by Americans. This presentation will examine each element of the Boren Awards orientation.>

Jeff Cary is an outreach manager for exchange programs administered by the Institute of International Education, including the Boren Awards, which fund long-term, language-focused study overseas for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students. He received a Boren Fellowship in 2005 to study Arabic at Yarmouk University in Irbid, Jordan. Jeff served as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State from 2006 to 2014, focusing on Public Diplomacy. His overseas assignments included Senegal, Pakistan, Lithuania, and Syria. Jeff received his Master of Science in Foreign Service from Georgetown University and his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Studies from the University of Kansas.
