Tara Madden-Dent, Ph.D., specializes in the cross-cultural and academic preparation and adjustment of international students studying in the United States. Central to her work is the advancement of research in the dynamics of international higher education social sciences. She works with the premise that increasing pre-departure cultural knowledge and intercultural skills, helps international students gain cultural awareness and sensitivities, allowing them to better navigate within diverse study abroad environments, to more easily manage adjustment/integration challenges, and more clearly understand U.S. higher education systems. In her research, she examines how the pattern of pre-departure and post-arrival cultural competency development link to greater study abroad successes, professional development, language development, and healthier lifestyles. Her previous work includes educational leadership, college student development, multicultural studies, education and society, and curriculum design at both college and university levels for undergraduate and graduate students.
