Karla Loebick, PhD, is a reccent graduate of the Higher, Adult, & Lifelong Education program at Michigan State University with a certification in Community Engagement. She has a bachelor’s degree from Baldwin Wallace College in International Studies, Business, and Spanish, during which she studied abroad in Ecuador, Spain, and South Africa and a master’s degree from The Ohio State University in Second and Foreign Language Education. Karla has participated in various education abroad programs and projects in Vietnam, South Africa, Mexico, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Rwanda. Karla’s interests focus on teaching and learning, international education, experiential education, and learning experiences in diverse contexts.

John MARTIN. Dirkx

John Dirkx is professor of higher, adult, and lifelong education at Michigan State University, where he teaches courses on teaching and learning in higher and adult education and has conducted an annual short-term study abroad experience for graduate students in education for seven years. For the past four years, he has conducted professional development for higher education teachers in Pakistan and Vietnam. His current research projects include the study of graduate student experiences in a short-term study abroad program in higher and adult education, and the development of teacher identity among new teachers in adult and higher education contexts within the United Kingdom. He is currently engaged in a professional development project designed to build instructional capacity among teachers in higher education in Vietnam. He is also editor of the Journal of Transformative Education (JTD) and author of numerous scholarly articles and books on adult learning, and a member of CIES.
