For the first time ever, IECA is offering a full day pre-conference field tour. Attendance for this event is sold separately from the full conference pass. This field event will include a bus from the Cobb Galleria to the Auburn University Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility in Opelika, Alabama (2 hour bus ride). Space is limited. 

Research Showcase at the Auburn University Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility



Field Session Leader: Wes Zech, Ph.D.
This field day will provide industry participants exposure to innovative research being performed on commonly employed construction site erosion and sediment control practices with hands-on field demonstrations.  The field instructional session will be held at the Auburn University  Erosion and Sediment Control Testing Facility (AU-ESCTF) in Opelika, Alabama.  Attendees will be provided with an opportunity to learn proper design and installation techniques on various erosion and sediment controls to achieve improved performance, and observe full-scale, channelized flow demonstrations.


Learning Objectives:
  1. Obtain training geared for participants involved in the installation, maintenance, inspection, and design of construction site erosion and sediment control practices.
  2. Attain knowledge in the appropriate design and installation of ESC practices.
  3. Understand how ESC practices function under simulated rainfall and runoff conditions.

Green Infrastructure with Multiple Benefits - The Atlanta Story

Green Atlanta

Field Session Leader: Cory Rayburn, CPSEC, CFM, Env SP
Through strong leadership, a commitment to sustainability, and collaborative partnerships, the City of Atlanta is implementing an approach to green infrastructure to address both combined sewer overflows and surface water management. Session participants will tour completed and planned projects that maximize water and sewer infrastructure investments while enhancing parks, streetscapes, and neighborhoods. Stops include award-winning Historic Fourth Ward Park on the Atlanta BeltLine; the catalytic Southeast Atlanta Green Infrastructure Initiative (four miles of permeable roadways); and emerging transformations in the Proctor Creek watershed. Participants will hear from the City of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed staff, as well as from key partners.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Learn how the City of Atlanta’s Department of Watershed Management (DWM) has embraced the use of green infrastructure for combined sewer capacity relief, economic development, and water quality improvements.
  2. Learn which types of green infrastructure practices are best utilized for site-scale versus a regional approach.
  3. Learn the importance of erosion and sediment control during the construction of green infrastructure practices.
  4. Learn the importance of developing partnerships when implementing a green infrastructure program city-wide.

Atlanta Braves SunTrust Park Stadium Field Tour

Learn about the development sequencing of the 57-acre SunTrust Park and Battery Atlanta site and the multi-faceted strategy implemented for erosion and sediment control to support the aggressive schedule while protecting Rottenwood Creek and the Chattahoochee River.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Participant will understand the importance of construction sequencing and the need to modify and relocate BMPs
  2. Participant will learn about methodologies to address large scale areas of disturbance
  3. Participant will learn about back-up measures to ensure state waters are protected in significant events
  4. Participants will learn about the importance of developing relationships with governing jurisdictions and inspectors
