What sets apart two organizations with the same resources and staff? What makes one high functioning and the other mediocre? The differentiating factor is the culture of the organization. Leaders to create an organization with engaged staff set themselves apart from others. Having engaged staff is critical to having a high functioning workforce and increased staff stability. An engaged staff is also the best strategy to recruit new talent to your organization. Three providers come together in this panel-based interactive session to share how they lead their staff to feel like "they belong" and increase their level of engagement.

Susan Cornell

Bayberry Commons

Susan Cornell is a Registered Dietitian and a Nursing Home Administrator with over with over 25 years’ experience working in long-term care. She has worked as a consultant dietitian for 8 years, was a Director of Food and Nutrition Services for 8 years and has been the administrator of Bayberry Commons nursing home in Pascoag, RI since 2009.
Susan successfully steered Bayberry Commons in being awarded the Silver Quality Award in 2012 and applied for the Gold Award in 2017. She is featured in a live interview discussing how to bring about positive change to nursing homes as a website accompaniment to Meeting the Leadership Challenge in Long Term Care (a book co-written by Barbara Frank, Cathy Brady and David Farrell). Susan was a speaker at the AHCA Quality Symposium in 2013 illustrating the changes to Bayberry Commons titled “Nursing Home in Need to a Nursing Home in the Lead”. Susan enjoys sharing the innovations and best practices from her nursing home at seminars throughout the state of RI and nationally. These programs include CAMP which stands for Centered Activity Memory Program providing a day full of activities for residents with dementia and an in-house Palliative Program. In 2016, she and her team presented their Palliative program at AHCA Quality Summit’s Poster Session and were also described in Provider Magazine’s September 2016 edition. Most recently she worked with her team to successful introduce Music and Memory providing 30 IPods to residents with dementia. Susan is the co-chair of the Rhode Island Quality Committee and was selected for the Rhode Island Distinguished Administrator of the Year in 2015.
Susan received her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Penn State University and completed her dietetic internship at Yale New Haven Hospital.

Nick Bridges

Nursing Home Administrator
Durgin Pines (Continuum Health Services)

My name is Nick Bridges, NHA, MS, OT/L and I am a Nursing Home Administrator currently operating in this role at Durgin Pines (Continuum Health Services), an 81 bed skilled nursing facility in Kittery, Maine. The only thing I knew when graduating from UNH all those years ago, was that I did not want to work in a nursing home... so of course I took my first job out of school in a nursing home and am so very glad that I did. Now at this point, having spent my 13 year career almost entirely in the arena of Long Term Care, as a staff Occupational Therapist, a Rehab Manager and now as an Administrator; I can honestly say that I love working within the LTC environment. It creates challenges and rewards that I'm not sure I could expect in other arenas and for this reason I can't wait to get back to work each day, to take another another challenge to improve the lives of those we serve.

Urvi Patel

Director, Quality Improvement

Ms. Patel is a passionate advocate for quality. At AHCA, she works diligently to support the Quality Awards program working with both providers and examiners to ensure a valuable and equitable experience. She is behind some of AHCA's Quality Initiative resources and activities and is responsible for high level documents that guide the quality department including many of the NQF endorsed measures and the Annual Quality Report. She leads the Workforce Committee and actively pursues issues that directly impact the workforce. Most recently, she has driven the conversation related to Mandatory Electronic Payroll Collection. She presents on many workforce issues as well as topics related to the Quality Awards.
