Managing for a Successful Survey and an Update on the New Survey Process

This session will focus on key concepts of successful survey management that can assist in achieving positive survey outcomes. Attendees will learn tips on ways to engage staff to be prepared to speak with surveyors and perform their duties with less anxiety while being observed. Also provided will be information related to the utilization of surveyor tools and worksheets that can be incorporated into a facility's QAPI process. The session will also cover self-identification of issues that could be considered non-compliant and provide an understanding of how information related to the use of past non-compliance can help avoid/reduce citations.

Also included in this session will be an update on the new survey process.

INTRODUCING

Joan Redden, RN, BC


Currently serving as Regional Director of Clinical Services, Providence Group, Inc., Vice President of Clinical and Risk Management with Skilled Healthcare, LLC at the Corporate Office in Foothill Ranch California. She had been with Skilled Healthcare, LLC since it was founded serving in both VP of clinical risk management and VP of Regulatory affairs.

Ms. Redden was instrumental in an ALJ groundbreaking decision in reversal of California Skilled Nursing Center’s Medicare termination, Carehouse vs. CMS, resulting in a $6 million dollar reinstatements of benefits due. She was a member of Texas Quality Assurance Committee that developed the Informal Dispute system for the State of Texas, which currently serves as the new CMS IIDR process in Texas. She is well known collaborative speaker on regulatory issues with both State and Federal surveyors as well as several States and American Health Care Association.
Ms. Redden has had extensive career in Long Term Care and is certified by ANCC, American Nurse Credentialing, as a Gerontological Nurse. She has served on Texas Health Care Board, and continues to serve on the California Health Care regulatory Committee and American Health Care Associations Survey and Regulatory Committee. She has attended the California Survey and Enforcement Academy giving her greater depth and understanding in the survey process.
Joan Redden is the lead Medical Record expert reviewer at JR & Associates and brings with her a vast experience in long term care, to include knowledge in Quality Assurance, Regulatory, Operations and the Medical Profession.
She is dedicated to providing the Health and Long Term Care profession with specialized RN Expert Nurse Witness’s, and will provide quality record reviews for your cases.

Steve Biondi, RN, MSN, MA, NHA is a seasoned long term care leader who has worked as a regulatory official, operations and clinical leader, and as an advocate. He is presently chairing the AHCA Survey and Regulatory committee , a member of the Quality Committee, and is part of the AHCA Quality Cabinet. In this role, he interacts with CMS Central Office on matters relating to quality and survey compliance.
Steve has been involved with AHCA on several committees since 1988 and has chaired the Facility Standards and Survey and Regulatory committe multiple times providing support to our affiliates.
He is presently pursuing a Ph D in Nursing with specialization in heart failure and the palliative considerations inherent in that syndrome's progression.
